According to a new study due to be published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, digestive or GI symptoms may be the only evidence of COVID-19. Although COVID-19 most commonly presents with respiratory symptoms, authors of the study found that a subgroup of patients present with GI symptoms only such as diarrhea.

The incidence of GI symptoms are unclear but reports range from 5% to 50% according to the American College of Gastroenterology. If you have new-onset GI symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, and are concerned that you may have COVID-19, please talk to your provider or call our office.

We understand there is a lot of anxiety and concern during these unique times, but we are here for you! Dr. Sinha and Hunterdon Digestive Health now have Virtual visits or telemedicine available immediately. Please contact us if you have any questions or need help setting up your video appointment.

The foods you consume impact all your bodily systems--not just your GI tract. At Hunterdon Digestive Health Specialists in Flemington and Hillsborough, NJ, gastroenterologist, Dr. Anubha Sinha, promotes healthy digestive eating habits for all her patients, no matter their stage in life.

You are what you eat

It's an old adage but so true. Your gastroenterologist at Hunterdon Digestive Health Specialists in Flemington and Hillsborough, NJ, sees her patients' health and well-being improve when they make simple lifestyle changes. The differences in mood, energy level, sleep patterns, productivity, and more are noticeable and measurable. With the right nutrients delivered at correct intervals in the proper amounts, gastrointestinal health and all it drives thrive.

Healthy digestive eating habits

The following practices will put your entire GI tract on notice to guard and optimize your systemic, oral, and mental health.

  • Aim for clean food. That's food which is as natural as possible and not overly processed. Eliminate sugar, artificial sweeteners, excess sodium, and red meat (and other sources of saturated fats) as much as possible.
  • Increase both soluble and insoluble fiber. Fruits, grains, and vegetables are good sources, reports Healthline. Fiber cleans out the colon and helps you absorb beneficial nutrients and water.
  • Eat low-fat proteins such as fish and poultry.
  • Drink a lot of water--up to two liters if possible, advises the National Institutes of Health.
  • Eat slowly, paying attention to what you are eating. If you race through your dinner absent-mindedly, you're less likely to enjoy it and may consume more than you need.
  • Eat yogurt regularly to increase beneficial bacteria in your gut.
  • Schedule your meals and snacks at the same time daily.
  • Maintain your weight within normal limits.
  • Exercise three to five times a week.
  • Find ways to manage stress. Anxiety speeds up digestion and limits nutrient absorption.
  • Limit alcohol and caffeine. Stop all tobacco usage.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Together we can take a stand to end the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths!

With so many people being misdiagnosed or diagnosed too late, the colonoscopy procedure is a safe and easy method for colon cancer prevention. Tolerable bowel prep is now available in many forms, each selected for patient’s individual needs. During your procedure you will be sedated by our Board Certified Anesthesiologist, assuring your safety is key.

Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men and women in the United States. It's expected to cause about 50,630 deaths during 2018. EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES!

Not sure when to get your screening? Here are some guidelines:

-Surveillance Colonoscopies should start at age 50

-Those of African American, Hispanic, or Asian descent should start colon cancer screenings at age 45

-If you have a strong family history of colon cancer, or a personal history of cancer, you may need to start screening earlier. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Sinha to determine when you should begin screening.

-If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms please call our office for a consultation:

  • Change in frequency of bowel movements
  • Constipation
  • Change in consistency of stools (loose or watery stools)
  • Blood in stools (either as bright red spots or dark "tarry" stools)
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Abdominal pain (bloating, gas or cramps)
  • Feeling you cannot completely empty your bowels

As per American Cancer Society Research, Colon Cancer and Rectal cancer are on the rise among young and middle-aged adults in the U.S. Be aware and safeguard yourself by being knowledgeable about the facts. Those born in 1990 have double the risk of colon cancer and quadruple the risk of rectal cancer.

More survey results include:

  • 15% reported that an emergency room visit led to a colonoscopy and their diagnosis
  • 62% did not have a family history of colorectal cancer
  • 67% saw at least two doctors before being diagnosed with cancer
