How a colonoscopy from your gastroenterologist in Hillsborough, NJ, can help you

Have you been advised to get a colonoscopy? If so, don’t worry. It’s a very common test if you are age 50 or older, used to detect Colonoscopycolorectal cancer in its early stages. Why is this important? Because early detection means early treatment which could save your life. Your doctor may advise you to get a colonoscopy if you are over 50 as a colon cancer screening, or earlier if you have abdominal pain, chronic constipation, chronic diarrhea, rectal bleeding, or other rectal issues. A colonoscopy may also be indicated if you have a history of intestinal polyps or growths.

To prepare for your appointment, you may be asked to stay on a liquid diet and take a variety of laxatives to help clear out your colon. Your doctor will let you know about preparing for your appointment.

A colonoscopy allows your doctor to view your large intestine and rectum for abnormal tissue, polyps, and signs of precancer or cancer. During the procedure, a long tube is inserted into your rectum and guided up through your intestine. The tube contains a camera at the end which allows your doctor to closely examine the inside of your colon and rectum. During the colonoscopy, your doctor may also remove a small amount of tissue for biopsy and remove any growths or polyps.

Your doctor will give you a sedative before treatment, which means you must bring a driver with you to your appointment. The treatment itself takes about 45 minutes, but you will spend about 2 to 3 hours in the office while you recuperate from the sedative.

A colonoscopy is an important procedure to protect your health. Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in this country. You don’t want to be a statistic. Who is at risk for colorectal cancer?
One of the biggest risk factors for colorectal cancer is simply getting older. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 90% of colorectal cancer cases occur in individuals over the age of 50. A family history of cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and lifestyle choices like alcohol or tobacco use, a poor diet which lacks an adequate amount of fruits and vegetables, and being overweight or obese also put someone at a higher risk of colorectal cancer.

When should I start having colon cancer screenings?
Colorectal cancer usually begins as noncancerous polyps found in the colon. These polyps are easily detectable with a colon cancer screening. This screening, which involves a long, thin tube with a camera on the end. This tube, called a colonoscope, allows your doctor to see inside the colon and visually find polyps. Doctors recommend beginning regular colon cancer screenings at the age of 50.
